Why are Korean Protestant Churches Hostile to Homosexuality and AIDS?

Abstract
Recently, Korean Protestant churches have been organized for anti-homosexuality and AIDS. They find the rationale of anti-homosexuality in the Bible. In addition, the increase of HIV infection and AIDS patients are regarded as a clue to anti-homosexuality. This paper has the goal to explain the different reactions of American and Korean protestant churches against homosexuality and AIDS. American churches showed the attitude of caring the AIDS victims during the period of high incidence of HIV infection and high rate of AIDS death in the early epidemic of AIDS. Korean protestant churches had no responses in the early epidemic, but showed strong hostility against homosexuals and AIDS victims in the period of no such mass AIDS death due to effective medicines. And the majority of protestant churches participate in the anti-homosexuality movement and are negative for accepting and caring homosexuals and AIDS victims. Korean protestant churches seem to try externalize their internal conflicts by utilizing the conservative sexual norms and public health risks. This anti-homosexuality movement would increase the unscientific perceptions of AIDS and social discrimination against AIDS victims, which make AIDS prevention more difficult.
